Monday April 22 thru Friday April 26th 2013 is National Park Week. April 23rd is National Junior Ranger Day and April 27th is Volunteer Day.

National Park Week was first proclaimed in 1991
President George H.W. Bush proclaimed National Park Week to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the National Park Service. Yellowstone was the first National Park in the world in 1872. Lassen Volcanic National Park was originally two separate national monuments; Cinder Cone National Monument and Lassen Peak National Monument. These two monuments and surrounding area were declared a National Park in 1916. The National Park Service was also created in 1916 by Woodrow Wilson. Both Lassen Park and the National Park service will be celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2016. As of 2013 the National Park system has over 450 natural, historical, recreational & cultural areas throughout the U.S. and its territories.

84 million acres are designated as National Park land, 17,000 miles of trails, 43,000 miles of shoreline, 27,000 historic or prehistoric structures, 100 million museum items and 12,000 campsites. As of 2013 there are 398 National Parks. There is at least one National Park in every state except Delaware. California is host to the most National Parks in a given state. Every American is less than 100 miles from a national park experience.

Over 106,000 acres, 150 miles of trails, only National Park with all 4 types of volcanoes, largest plug dome volcano in the world, southern most volcano in the Cascade Range, 779 plant species, 216 species of birds, 11 campgrounds with 496 campsites, 3 areas with stock corrals (Butte Lake, Juniper Lake and Summit Lake). Lassen Park road is the highest road in the Cascade Mountains reaching 8,512 feet. One of the least visited National Parks, making it a great park to get out and explore without crowds found at some other National Parks. Plan you trip now to Lassen.

St. Bernard Lodge is only 20 minutes from the SW park entrance of Lassen Park also within a few hours of Whiskeytown and Lava Beds. Whiskeytown should have spring flowers and Lassen will still have snow for snow-play for the kids, snowshoeing or cross country skiing. If you enjoy exploring caves Lava Beds is for you. Get out and enjoy the Spring!
Bring your kids on April 23rd for National Junior Ranger Day. Currently there are over 290 Junior Ranger Programs in the National Park Service.
